Executive Director Carrie Santoro at the Hands Off Lancaster Mass Meeting
Hey Friend,
I wanted to take a moment to talk about what happened in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and why it matters for every single one of us.
This past Sunday, 171 people from across Lancaster County showed up for each other, grounded in our shared values, and spoke honestly about what’s at stake this November. But we didn’t just talk about it. We made a plan for what we’re willing to do about it.
Some neighbors had never been to anything like this before. Longtime organizers shared what they know, and there were stories, connections, and the kind of energy you can only get when people decide to stop waiting and start moving. For me, it was powerful, it was grounding, and it reminded me why we have to keep showing up.
But friend, I have to be honest about what we’re up against.
Right now, billionaires like Jeffrey Yass, one of the biggest political donors in Pennsylvania’s history, and data center developers with more money than conscience are working overtime to buy our Democracy. They are funding candidates who don’t answer to Pennsylvania families. They answer to the people writing their campaigns checks.
This isn’t about policy disagreements; it’s about whether voters actually get to choose their leaders, or whether a handful of billionaires do it for us. This regime is making deliberate moves to make it harder for working people to vote because they know if we all vote, they lose.
Last weekend, we weren’t blown away by the number of people in the room, but we were blown away that 88 people committed to leave that room and go out and do something. As we head into the midterm election, doing something will matter enormously. The path forward isn’t complicated, but it does require us to act — together, right now, before the window closes. We can’t just hope that the good guys will win. We have to make it happen.
Here are a few ways you can get involved
- Register and make a plan to vote
- Join a training or virtual phone bank
- Come out to a local in-person event
What happened in Lancaster was not the end of something. It was the beginning. The people in that room were proof that when we decide to stand together, something real gets built.
We’re proud to be in this work with you, friend! Let’s keep voting, volunteering, or attending events. That’s how you help to build a stronger movement. Together, we can create real change and protect our democracy.
In solidarity,
Edwin
