I have to move.
I can’t afford my apartment on my own after my current lease is up, and I can’t even afford a smaller apartment in my current building or my neighborhood. I’m effectively being priced out.
Recently, I started looking around at apartments. To live on my own without a roommate, I have very limited options. To find something I can afford on my own, I have to leave my neighborhood and sacrifice the amenities and space that I have now.
Landlords are requiring that you make 3x your rent in a month without a co-signer, and I just barely make it for a few places.
Frankly, this stressful process made me really angry. While scouring the internet, touring, applying, and hoping I’d be able to secure an apartment, I just kept thinking to myself, it shouldn’t be this hard. Working people should be able to find safe and affordable housing in our neighborhoods without rising costs getting in our way.
That’s just the tip of the iceberg if things don’t change. With prices continuing to go up, including housing, I know that my longterm dreams of simply owning a small home, getting married, and having reliable healthcare are at risk. I’ll be forced to choose between them.
It doesn’t have to be this way.
Knowing I’m struggling to find a place I can afford while our government is prioritizing funding illegal wars, billionaires, and greedy corporations is infuriating! We shouldn’t have to sacrifice big milestones, goals, and aspirations so the rich can get richer while we struggle to put a roof over our heads and food on our tables.
We have the power to make a difference when we come together, and an affordable PA that works for everyone is worth fighting for. We’re all being impacted by increasing prices of housing, healthcare, grocery, energy costs, cuts to SNAP and Medicare/Medicaid, and more.
