The United States is a scary place to call home right now. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t scared too. We’re witnessing a president, a wannabe dictator, trying to take away our freedoms and resources. Our freedom to decide whether and how to grow our families, our freedom to drink safe water and breathe clean air, our freedom to make a good living and retire in dignity, our/our children’s freedom to learn, our freedom to get the medical care we need without going bankrupt, our freedom to move and give our families a better life, our freedom to join a union and negotiate a fair contract, our freedom to marry who we love, and so much more. We have a decision to make. Will we let fear, a tool of the state to oppress us and our power, consume us, or will we do shit scared? I’m choosing to do shit scared, and I’m asking you to join me.
We’re stronger together, and Trump and his billionaire allies know that. They want us to be so overwhelmed we’re paralyzed in fear, but we won’t let them win. We will work together for our families, our neighbors, and our communities. We will protect each other, and we will build power and elect officials who co-govern with us and help us all obtain the resources we need to thrive. We will take time for radical rest as an act of defiance in a society that’s designed to make us too busy to take care of ourselves and our neighbors. We will find moments of hope, joy, and clarity amidst the chaos. We will find community across race, place, and generation, and we will fight for what we deserve together.
As a Philly native, I rejoiced with my community this past Sunday. The Philadelphia Eagles won the NFC championship game and are headed to the Super Bowl to face the Kansas City Chiefs again! The energy was palpable as the sea of midnight and kelly green flooded Broad Street chanting, “E-A-G-L-E-S EAGLES!!!” Neighbors across generation, race, class, political party, and background all came together to celebrate the win. During this time of year “go birds” is an acceptable greeting, a thank you, a goodbye, whatever, no matter who you are or who you’re talking to. This moment of community-wide joy got me thinking. Imagine how powerful we would be if we all came together to fight for working class power the same way we celebrate the birds?!
We can, and we will, but it will take all of us. It’s up to us to protect each other and fight for a better future. What are you waiting for? Join us!
