Allentown neighbors demanding elected officials vote against cuts to Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security at April 5th “Hands Off” protest.
MAGA Republicans in Congress, backed by Trump and his billionaire bros, are trying to rig the tax system for their benefit with $880 billion in federal Medicaid cuts. That represents 29% of state-financed Medicaid spending per resident.
According to KFF, “[The cuts] are equivalent to all Medicaid spending on 3 million seniors and people with disabilities (18% of enrollees in that group), 14 million other adults (38% in that group), or 22 million children enrolled in Medicaid (76% of that group)”. Nationwide, about 1.03 million working-class people would lose their jobs in healthcare, food related industries, and other sectors if the cuts to Medicaid and SNAP pass.
To put those numbers in perspective, in PA, as of August 2024, 3.2 million Pennsylvanians were enrolled in Medicaid and CHIP, and over 2.9 million Pennsylvanians were enrolled in Medicare. Millions of Pennsylvanians would be deprived of vital healthcare if these cuts pass while the rich get tax cuts.
Billionaires want us to get sicker and poorer while they exploit us and our tax system to get richer. THAT AIN’T RIGHT! So what can we do about it?
Email your member of Congress and tell them to oppose the healthcare cuts! Our elected officials are supposed to represent us, so make your voice heard!!
Here in PA, the State House passed 4 bipartisan bills with Affordable Care Act protections at the end of March. The bills would allow adult children to stay on their parents’ private health insurance until age 26, prohibit insurers from setting annual or lifetime limits on your cost of care, prohibit insurers from denying coverage because of pre-existing conditions, and require health insurance policies to cover preventative health care without cost sharing. We can’t rely on a billionaire-led trifecta at the national level to protect us. We need these protections at the state level too.
Now, these bills are sitting in the PA State Senate’s Banking & Insurance Committee. They must pass through the committee to be put to a vote in the Senate, so contact Banking & Insurance Committee Chair Chris Ghebard, Minority Chair Sharif Street, and other members of the committee, and tell them to get it done!
We all deserve to live with safety, dignity, and the resources we need to thrive. That includes reliable and affordable healthcare.
We’re building a PA that works for all of us, and we’re stronger together. It takes all of us doing our part to get there, so join us!
