Job Description
This full-time salaried position is responsible for the development of a volunteer program for remote in-state and out-of-state volunteers of Pennsylvania Stands Up. This is an organizing position within the Communications Department. This is a political leadership position, responsible for helping to develop the distributed program’s overarching strategy (in collaboration with other PA Stands Up staff), grow our base of dues-paying members, and recruiting remote volunteers to participate in and lead the distributed organizing program.
The Distributed Organizer will also be responsible for mid-level data management work, which would include overseeing data and technology systems for, and providing training and technical support to PASU statewide teams and local chapters.
The position can be based anywhere in our geographic footprint (Central or Eastern PA), and may include on-the-ground support in areas with emerging chapters and no local staff. This position will be supervised by the Director of Narrative and Strategy with support from the Regional Organizing Managers, as well as the Director of Power-Building.

PA Stands Up is a union shop, this position is within the union’s bargaining unit.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement a strategy for recruiting, managing, and developing remote volunteers across Pennsylvania — both in regions with PA Stands Up chapters and areas with no chapters. This could include but is not limited to building a volunteer texting team to do outreach on PASU’s local issue campaigns and electoral work via texting, making phone calls, and other various methods of outreach, building a volunteer events team to recruit, and develop leaders across the state to hosts hundreds of events statewide, and building and maintaining relationships with key volunteer leaders who have the potential to lead PA Stands Up’s distributed strategy through 1:1s, training, and planning meetings.
- Build up a statewide team to create and maintain a statewide issue campaign. This includes working with the Regional Organizing Managers, Local Organizers, and their local issue teams.
- Communicate our statewide campaigns and member stories across media platforms. This includes storytelling, workshops, and working with the Director of Narrative and Strategy to develop narrative & messaging and strategies for story sharing to external partners, media, and our volunteer base.
- Build and maintain teams of volunteer leaders capable of managing and executing direct voter contact tactics. These would include tactics such as remote phone banks, text banks, postcards, and any other direct voter contact tactics we may deploy over the course of the 2025 General election and beyond.
- Work with the Director of Narrative Strategy and Director of Power Building to develop distributed tools to be used throughout the organization on both elections and issue campaigns such as Every Action, Spoke, etc.
- Train members in leadership development work. Which includes training on our technological tools, theory of change, campaign skills. Develop distributed “pod leaders” for virtual phone banks and other actions/events. Utilizing PASU Ladder of Engagement and development in grassroots organizing skills.
- Recruit volunteers from outside of the chapter to regions to join our statewide organization as dues-paying members.
Qualities of a Successful Candidate:
- A minimum of 2-3 years of relevant experience in grassroots organizing, labor organizing, community organizing, or electoral politics.
- Demonstrated leadership ability and experience working in working class and poor communities, rural areas and/or communities of color
- A demonstrated commitment to equity, justice and liberation for all people
- A team player who shines as an individual leader while taking a collaborative approach to working with others to achieve shared objectives
- A goal-driven, detail-oriented self-starter and problem-solver with strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
- Experience operating in a high paced, metrics based environment, with strong time management, project management, and organization skills.
- Ability to use or learn to use digital tools like: EveryAction, Spoke, ThruTalk, and more
- Bi-lingual Spanish/English a plus
SALARY AND BENEFITS
- This position has a yearly salary of $59,360.00, with a benefits package that includes medical, dental, and vision insurance coverage, and other benefits negotiated by the staff union.
